Now there's something that doesn't happen to me too often, but Ed's playing softball and Abby's taking her nap, so Mommy gets some free time. I really should be doing a little cleaning, but I'm just not feeling it right now. Maybe later...
We had a lovely day yesterday at Abby's friend Jordan's birthday party. Another fun day with my girlfriends and their kiddies. We need to do it more often...there's really no reason not to besides nobody being motivated enough to plan a date. Since my unemployment doesn't seem to be at an end anytime soon, perhaps I will work on that. Anyway, the party was fun, food was good and the weather was beautiful. Who could ask for anything more? My only regret was not going back for a second helping of the taco salad...yum!
Today is looking pretty nice too. I'm just waiting for Abby to wake up so I can give her lunch and then take her outside to play. We'll actually be able to set up her water table for the first time since the day we bought it last week. She'll be thrilled. I also want to try her on her big slide again today. She hasn't been too crazy about sliding boards in general, but I took her to the park yesterday after I dragged her around yard-sale hopping and she shocked me by going down the biggest twisty slide all by herself. She kept watching the other couple kids do it and she started inching toward it. I never thought she'd do it, but next thing I know she's sitting down and taking off. I had to run down to the bottom of the slide to make sure she was okay, but she had already climbed off and was running off somewhere else at that point. She didn't try it again, but it was a definite step in the right direction.
At least that part of the morning was fun. I was looking forward to going to the yard sales, but I didn't find a single good bargain this time around. I was excited because one of the sales I saw posted on craigslist had a Cozy Coupe advertised, which is something I've been looking for for Abby. I went there first and asked how much she wanted for it and she told me $30. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...no! For $5 more I can get a brand-new one on sale. She told me that her daughter only used it once, so it was still brand-new. My opinion is that if it's used, it's used. I won't pay more than $15 for a used one. Oh well...I doubt she was able to get rid of it at that price. She actually had several things I was interested in, but she had over-priced all of them. Didn't have much luck anywhere else either. Maybe next week will be better.

Abby started crying as soon as we pulled into the driveway at daycare today. I'm sure she was fine 2 minutes after I left like she was yesterday, but it still kills me to leave her crying like that. I keep telling myself that it's for her own good...once I (God willing) start working again, she's going to have a much harder time adjusting if I just kept her home with me all of the time. Stupid Mommy Guilt!

Abby is going through a major "Mommy Phase" right now. While I'm totally eating it up (who doesn't want to be completely loved and adored by their child?), it can be a bit tiresome at times. Sometimes I can't even go to the bathroom without her having a fit. When it's just the two of us at home, I won't even bother closing the door. Ed and I have a strict "some things should be kept private" policy in regards to the bathroom, so the door is shut when he's around. Sometimes she doesn't even want to go to her daddy (or her grandmothers or her Pop)...she just wants to cling to me. Dropping her off at daycare today was not fun at all. As soon as she saw Simran, she had a death-grip on me. Simran pryed her off of me and she starting screaming and throwing herself backwards. It was not pretty at all.
She had to deal with some mommy-less time this weekend since I actually had places to go without her. Saturday my friend Tim was ordained as a deacon, so I went to the ceremony by myself. It was really cool...I'm so glad I went. How often do you get to see someone you've known for over half your life go through something like that? The ceremony was beautiful and it was held at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, which is the biggest and most beautiful church I've ever been in (with the possible exception of St. Patrick's Cathedral in NY). I was a little late getting there though since my husband was less than cooperative about helping me get out of the house on time. Then I had to detach a screaming toddler from my legs...she wanted to go "byebyes" and most definitely did not want Mommy going "byebyes" without her.
Being the naughty Catholic that I am, I snuck out of the ceremony during communion and went home to get Abby ready for the party at Meg and Tim's house. That was a nice time and I got to see my girlfriends and Abby got to see her little girlfriends. Next week we have Jordan's birthday party to go to, so we'll get to see them again then. Yay!
Sunday morning I managed to get out of the house before Abby woke up and went to Tim's first mass as a deacon. He got to read the gospel and give the sermon, so that was cool. It was a beautiful sermon too...I even teared up towards the end. Ed, on the other hand, got to deal with a grumpy Abby who was not happy that Mommy wasn't home to get her up from her crib. Hehehehehe. She kept pointing to our bedroom door and saying "mama! mama!" He finally got her out of there and she was happy once he gave her breakfast ("Nana!").
When I got home, we went shopping. Ed dropped Abby and me off at Target while he ran to Lowes to grab a few things he needed. I wanted to run to the toy section to get Abby the Step 2 Water Table that was on sale for $25. That was the lowest price I've ever seen on it and I've been wanted to get her one for awhile, so we decided to just suck it up and use Ed's umpire money to get if for her. Let me tell you...it was well worth every penny. She played with it for about 40 minutes straight Sunday afternoon and then kept going back to it every time we went back outside. We'll definitely get a lot of use out of that this summer.
That evening Ed's parents stopped by so that his dad could help Ed anchor the swingset into the ground with cement. That sucker isn't going anywhere! Abby was happy to be able to play with Gram and Pop. Then my mom came over for cheeseburgers on the grill yesterday, so Abby once again got a grandparent day. All in all, it was a lovely holiday weekend.

Since I'm on a never-ending search for fun and free things to do with Abby during the day, I decided to head up to Harford County today to finally checkout Annie's Playground. What a cool place that is. It totally made me wish that I was five again so that I could enjoy it on a child's level.
I don't think that Abby is quite ready to enjoy it the way it should be enjoyed just yet. The whole place is like one big maze, so you really have to stick to your kid like glue or else risk losing track of them. Luckily I just have one 19-month-old to look after, but it would definitely be a huge challenge to take more than one kid by yourself. Plus, the maze-like quality makes little things like catching your kid at the bottom of the sliding board to be more difficult than it is at a normal playground. Abby's still very hesitant about sliding boards, so at least that wasn't a problem for me this time.
I'll definitely be taking her back though. She loved the swings and the area with the cool music stuff. She was also obsessed with the toys built into the walls that she could spin...she did that for about ten minutes straight. It will definitely be more fun once she's older and can enjoy the really, really cool "big kid" stuff.

When Becky and I were much, much younger, we used to go to the library all of the time. We lived within walking distance of the old PH library, so Mom would take us at least once a week or so and when we got older, we would walk there ourselves even more than that. I would checkout six or seven books per visit and devour them in no time. Going to the library was just what we did.
Then, as we got older and entered high school, we just stopped going. I don't really know why. For me, it was probably because I had moved onto adult books and my mom had such an extensive library of her own, that I didn't need that alternate source of reading material. Once I started working at B&N, I REALLY didn't need to go to the library anymore. Being able to checkout hardcovers from the store was a great employee perk that I miss. I did get a new library card a few years ago once I talked Ed into listening to the audio versions of the Harry Potter books with me and I realized that I wasn't willing to spend $50+ per book to own them. But that was all I ever checked out.
Now that I'm no longer working for B&N and I'm on the hunt for free activities to do with Abby, I've finally rediscovered the library. We've made the trek to Storyville several times, but I usually only do that after I've picked Abby up from daycare on Mondays, since they're usually not crowded then. The only problem there is that the children's section of the actual library part of the building leaves much to be desired. For some reason, I feel bad taking books from the Storyville Library to checkout to take home. I just feel like they should stay there as part of the experience for the kids.
Then I discovered the new PH library. That place is awesome...as is it's children's section. My favorite things about it are the fact they they have two bays worth of kids DVDs that you can checkout for three weeks for free and that they have a pretty large selection of board books. They also have a lot of kids Cd's, but I usually can't spent much time looking through them as my child just wants to run through the rows of books and won't let me hold her for more than two minutes once we get there. Right now she's still more interested in just walking around and looking at (and trying to grab at) everything and everyone then she is in looking at the books while we're there or playing with the toys they have available.
We went there for the second time today and I was able to checkout two Sesame Street DVDs and six board books for Abby. As a bonus, I even managed to finagle my way to the adult section to grab a book for myself. Score! It feels nice to know that I'm going to help my child love going to the library just as much as I did when I was young. We'll be going back a lot...and if you haven't been to the new library, you must check it out. It's not quite the same as "Storyville" for entertaining little ones, but it definitely holds its own.

Abby's fever finally broke on Friday, so we actually got to enjoy my birthday. Remember when having a birthday and turning another year older was awesome? Now...not so much. ;) Still had a nice day though. Abby and I met my mom for breakfast, where Abby ate most of a Jr. Grand Slam. Yeah, she was hungry...and she likes salty meats and eggs. The pancakes were the only thing she wasn't as crazy about. Then, since Abby was feeling better and had been cooped up in the house for most of the week, my mom and I took her to the park and then to Chapel Hill Nursery to see the animals. She had a blast at both places and loved seeing the animals up close and in person. I'll be taking her back there lots this summer!
That evening Ed and I dropped Abby off at my mom's, where Aunt Becky and her cousins were waiting for her. So she had more fun playing with them while Mommy and Daddy went out to dinner. By themselves!!! Apparently Becky tried to teach Abby and Claire how to roll down the hill next to my mom's house like we used to do when we were little, but they wound up rolling across the hill instead. Hysterical. Many pictures were taken and Grandmom even ordered a photo CD when she took the camera in to be processed, so I should be able to post some soon. Ed and I went to Damon's for dinner, since they won the "Who Sent Me the Best Birthday Coupon" contest. Seriously, sign up for as many restaurant chain e-mail lists as possible. I got some kick-ass coupons that don't expire until this Friday. The one for Damon's was a free entree with the purchase of a second entree. Score! I also recommend the Coldstone Creamery, Noodles and Company, Red Robin and Charcoal Grill lists as well...great freebies!
Saturday morning I woke up with Abby and we went yardsalin'! Our Community Association was doing a multi-family yardsale day. I have plenty of stuff to sell, but after watching people waste their time setting up for this event only to have no customers the past couple years, I'm still going to hold out for a better opportunity. But that was no reason for me to pass up the yardsale deals, so I gave Abby breakfast, put her in her stroller, and away we went. I got quite a few great deals on toys for her, so it was worth the hour and 15 minute walk around the neighborhood. My best finds were a magnadoodle for 50 cents, a Melissa & Doug chunky wooden puzzle for $1, and a new-in-box baby doll highchair for $2. Maybe I'll staring checking Craigslist and the local papers for more multi-family yardsales in the area...that was fun. Feel free to join me! :)
Yesterday was our day of chilling. I got to sleep in and Ed's softball games were canceled (yay!), so much relaxing was had. It's back to normal today though. Abby was actually upset when I left her at daycare today, so I was a little upset too. That's why I hated skipping her second day last week, but she couldn't help being sick. I just know that if I gave up daycare all together, it would be really ugly once I did start working again. I'm sure she was fine as soon as I shut the door behind me, but I still hate to leave her like that. I suffer from classic mommy guilt...I can't help myself.

When I picked Abby up from daycare on Monday, she was extremely clingy. Now, she's usually somewhat clingy when I get her, but this was excessive...head glued to my shoulder and everything. I had a feeling that something was wrong, so I felt her forehead and it seemed a bit warm to me. By the time I got her home and tried again, it was really warm. Great. Naturally, we were out of baby Motrin thanks to the recent teething she'd been going through, so I dosed her with Tylenol before she went down for the night and had Ed pickup the good stuff on his way home from a late meeting.
I figured that she'd wake up crying at some point that night and I'd give her the Motrin then. Sure enough, at 10:30 she was up and wanting her mama. So we just went in and got her, gave her the medicine and let her play downstairs (where it's much cooler) until she was sleepy again. By the time she went back down at midnight, she felt much cooler, so I slept much better than I would have otherwise.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure just how high her fever got because she's stopped letting me take her temperature the "old fashioned way" and she won't cooperate to let me do it under her arm either. Those methods and the under-the-tongue method are the only ones available to me with the thermometer that we have, so I'm going to have to suck it up and purchase either an ear one or a forehead swiper one. Anybody have any recommendations for something that's reasonably priced?
Yesterday she was still warm, although not hot, most of the day. At least she was in a pretty good mood other than that. She took a four-hour nap, so that was a bonus for Mommy. She slept until 9ish today, but she kept waking up off and on from 6:30 on. I put her down for a nap around noon, but she's just been playing in the crib for about 45 minutes. She looks like she's about to finally fall asleep though. Hopefully she'll feel better when she wakes up so maybe we can actually leave the house. I called daycare this morning to switch her day from today to tomorrow, so we'll see how she feels in the morning.
Hopefully it's not something that I'll wind up catching. It would be my luck to be sick on my birthday. Blah.

Heh...apparently Abby had a little incident over my in-law's yesterday. My MIL had foot surgery not too long ago, so the running after the girls and such has fallen on my FIL to do. He loves the girls, but isn't used to being that much in charge. When naptime rolled around yesterday, he set Abby's pack-n-play up in their bedroom. Apparently he didn't think about how the mind of a curious 18-month-old works, so he set it up a little too close to my MIL's jewelry armourer. When he came back to get her (after she refused to nap at all), he found a pack-n-play covered with jewelry and a toddler who smelled like perfume. Hahahahahahahaha! I guess I shouldn't think it's so funny since she could have sprayed the perfume in her eyes or something, but I can't help laughing every time I think about it.
Right now she's refusing once again to take a nap. I know she's tired...especially after skipping the nap yesterday and getting up earlier than usual today. She was being whiny, rubbing her eyes and yawning when I put her down...but she's being stubborn. If she doesn't suck it up and fall asleep soon, she's going to miss out on her playdate. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Good lord...for a simple customer service rep position, you sure gotta go through a lot to get the job. I had an interview today which lasted about 40 minutes...and that's after I filled out an application and a 3-page personality test (?!?!?!). Then I was told that if they were interested in talking to me again, I would get a call sometime next week for a second interview with the same manager, the district manager and possibly someone else. If they still like me after that, I get to "shadow" someone already in the position to get a feel for the job and to get any questions I may have answered. Then if they still like me, I get to have a "formal" interview with several other people. Sheesh! But, I guess we'll just see what happens.
Hopefully the process for the job I'm interviewing for on Monday isn't quite as complicated. I already know that I'll be doing two interviews that day...one with the girl who did the phone interview and then another with someone in the fundraising department. I'm still really holding out hope for this one. It seems right up my alley. :)
Now I get the next couple hours to myself since I dropped Abby off at the in-laws this morning and Ed's not picking her up until 7:30ish. Luckily I packed her some jammies so he can change her there. It was a good day to drop her off since her cousin Kaylee happened to be there today too. They are so cute together. Then she gets to play with her cousin Claire and her friend Jordan tomorrow, so it will be a good end-of-the-week for Abby.

Just as I was starting to get discouraged because I still haven't heard back from the place I interviewed with a couple weeks ago, I went and had not one, but two phone interviews today. Yay me! And they both wanted to schedule me to come in for real interviews, so double yay me! The first one is tomorrow at 3 and is for a customer service representative position. The second one is Monday at 8:45 and is actually an event-planning/donor relations position for a local hospital system. I'm really excited about that one and am really hoping for the best. Wish me luck!
Have I mention how sick I am of rain? Gah! Abby is getting tired of being cooped up inside all day every day now that she went and got used to having outside playtime. Ed managed to take her out for a quick walk up and down the street before it started raining this evening, so that improved her mood greatly. She'll be at my MIL's tomorrow since I have the interview and we have a playdate at Becky's on Friday, so hopefully the change of scenery will help as well. Hopefully the weather will clear up soon and we'll have some nice, warm (not hot!) spring days to enjoy.

Playdate over Ms. Meghan's house. Abby, Jordan and Paige playing through the screen door.
Playing on the swingset. If you look closely, you can see Paige the Daredevil climbing up the ladder in the back.
Abby seizing control of the car while everyone else foolishly ran off to play in the sandbox.
Playing in her new playhouse, thanks to Aunt Becky and Uncle Scott. Loving being able to play outside...and her big ball that she got for Easter.
Over Aunt Becky's house...Grandmom and Ryan.
Grandmom being silly with Claire.
Abby doing her Billy Joel impression.
She drives me crazy with the bubbles. If they're anywhere within sight, she will find a way to get to them.
This would be the crazy shoe pic. Gotta love her sense of style. The "Grandpa Bear" in the mouth completes the look.
Playing on her new climb and slide, thanks to her Aunt Wendi. Abby's lucky to have such awesome aunts!
Somehow my child has developed a shoe fetish. She definitely doesn't get it from me since I've never been a shoe person. If they're comfy, I'm happy. Her greatest joy right now is to grab random a shoe from the storage container we keep them in, bring it to me and then hold up her foot so I'll put it on her. She's often walking around the house in either one shoe or in mismatched shoes. It's pretty funny. I have a picture on my camera of her in one sandal and one boot that I'll have to download and post. She cracks me up.
This weekend was nice. With the rainy weather, it was a good time to stay in and relax. Apparently the weather has a nice effect on Abby since she slept in until 10 yesterday morning...and then proceeded to take a 2 1/2 hour nap starting at 2. Go ahead, be jealous. ;) Of course, this morning she was up at 6, but I'm pretty sure that was because she was cold. I ran out of long sleeve/long pants jammies and put her in a nightgown. Big mistake since my child cannot stop moving while she sleeps and managed to get the nightgown to ride up to her hips, so her legs were exposed. Oops. We have a space heater in her room that I had on last night, but she still woke up cold. Guess I'm doing Abby's laundry today.
In other Abby news, her top two eye teeth have broken through and the bottom ones look like they're getting ready to join the show as well. That explains a lot of the crankiness we've been dealing with lately. Although I'm sure most of it is just normal 18-month-old stuff. She's starting to get an independent streak, which is very cute when it's not incredibly frustrating. The temper tantrums are coming much more frequently now and any little thing can set them off. Yesterday she had two...the first because she wanted to go upstairs while Ed was trying to get some work done up here and the second because she was hungry and dinner wasn't getting done fast enough. All normal, but it starts to wear on one's nerves after awhile. Good thing she's cute! ;)
